Annual Maintenance: Building the Foundation of a Healthy Lawn

As spring approaches, it’s important to remember the foundational elements of good lawn care. While some of these steps may seem obvious, the impact that they have on your lawn cannot be understated. These steps are not the most glamorous actions and won’t necessarily result in an overnight transformation of your lawn, but they provide the foundation—the building blocks, you might say—to a beautiful, healthy lawn. If you aren’t already doing these things regularly, they provide a great place to start if you’re hoping to improve your lawn this year.

  1. Fertilization Program: Implementing a five-step fertilization program is essential for providing your lawn with the nutrients it needs to grow thick and lush. Begin with a pre-emergent fertilizer application to prevent weed growth, followed by subsequent applications around Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Halloween. As the weather turns warmer and grass begins to grow again, pre-emergent fertilizer helps to prevent weeds from sprouting up by creating a barrier between the air and soil.

  2. Consistent Mowing: Consistently mowing your lawn at the proper height is crucial for promoting healthy growth and preventing weed development. It can be helpful to change mowing direction regularly to prevent grass from leaning in one direction and to cut your grass relatively short to encourage thick, dense growth. For example, if I cut my lawn in a vertical pattern this week, it might be helpful to cut in a horizontal pattern next week.

3. Annual/Biannual Aeration: Aerating your lawn once or twice a year is essential for relieving soil compaction, allowing nutrients to penetrate the soil, and promoting seed germination. This process creates small holes in the soil, enabling air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots effectively.

  1. Address Problems As Needed: Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, problems can still arise. It can be discouraging to see weeds or patches of dead grass sprout up, but it is important not to delay in seeking treatment so that we can get to the root of problems before they get worse. As the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so even if you are unsure that something is a problem, give us a call as soon as possible and we will be more than happy to help you address it.
