Most landscape lighting companies approach a property with a formula: a certain number of uplights here, path lights there, a transformer tucked in the corner. Once the fixtures are in the ground, the job is considered done. That is not how Distinct does lighting.
This approach isn’t for every homeowner. If you’re looking for a quick, one-size-fits-all install, there are companies that do that well. But if you want a system designed specifically around your property, your habits, and how you actually spend time outdoors after dark, that’s where we come in.
It starts with a conversation, not a clipboard.
Our lighting designer walks the property with you, asking how you use the space and what matters most to you. We establish the areas that need attention and where safety and security may be a concern. That discovery process is the foundation everything else is built on. The design then starts on paper: a scaled plan that maps every fixture and zone across the property, followed by a rendering that closely represents what the finished installation will look like. You see the potential before a single shovel hits the ground.
We’re upfront about investment at this stage too. Before any fixture is ordered, you’ll know exactly what the system costs and what you’re getting for it, no surprises once the work begins.
From Rendering to Reality
Once the design is approved, installation is scheduled around your property and your life, not the other way around. Our crews work efficiently and cleanly, protecting existing landscaping and leaving the property the way they found it, minus the guesswork of what your lighting will look like. Most residential installs are completed in a matter of days, not weeks, and by the time we’re done, the system already matches the rendering you approved.
We test it before we trust it.
We openly share every product we install. Each one has been chosen deliberately, and we’re happy to walk you through exactly what goes into your system and why.

We’ve personally visited the manufacturers we work with and maintain direct relationships with their ownership; that relationship is what lets us test new products on our own properties first. If something doesn’t hold up through Chicago winters and years of real use, it doesn’t get selected for a client, regardless of what the spec sheet promises.
We design with our climate in mind from the start, accounting for how daylight shifts dramatically between June and December and how our landscaping demands change with the seasons.
Every system we design is built on energy-efficient LED fixtures with a lifespan measured in decades, not seasons. Smart controls let you adjust zones, schedules, and brightness from your phone, so the system adapts to how your life actually changes throughout the year, not just how it looked the day it was installed.

The care doesnt end at installation
System Stewardship is part of every installation, not an add-on. For most properties, two visits a year, in the spring and fall, keep the system performing and looking the way it was designed. Clients who want their system to be truly perfect can add visits throughout the season. Either way, the care is scheduled, proactive, and documented, never reactive.
It was never just about the fixtures.
None of this is really about fixtures. It’s about a property that looks intentional after dark. We make properties safer to move through, more welcoming to come home to, and they’re lit by someone who was there alongside you and your vision every step of the way. That’s the difference discovery-first design makes, and it’s the standard we hold every Distinct property to.
If your property is ready for a system designed around how you actually live, schedule a consultation with our team and see what’s possible before a single fixture goes in the ground.
